Live Goes Live

Sobeys LIVE @ The Centre! returns with a bang this October and the line-up is chalk-full of dynamic performances that appeal to a wide range of Islanders, visitors, and beyond.

“This season truly has something for everyone,” says Darcy Campbell, director of LIVE @ the Centre, a long-standing program of Confederation Centre of the Arts. “The program includes A-list musicians from a wealth of genres, family entertainment, contemporary dance, several first-time holiday concerts, and more!”

The 2019-20 line-up includes artists and performers that truly showcase the wealth of talent in this country, including Basia Bulat, Crash Test Dummies, and Steven Page, as well as local award-winning performers, The East Pointers, Catherine MacLellan, andAndrew Waite.

“Because LIVE is not a long run of single shows, a great variety can be enjoyed. So, take a chance on something new this season–there’s so much to explore!” adds Campbell.

As part of their new album launch, long-time Island rock icons,Paper Lions present a thrilling ‘Super Show’ on Saturday, October 19, using all the bells and whistles of the Homburg Theatre and welcoming a line-up of special guests and local musicians.

Calgary-based dance company, Decidedly Jazz Danceworks makes their long-awaited return November 6 with Juliet & Romeo. The company’s high-energy, unique jazz style has caused people to describe their work as “music for the eyes.”

Two Canadian country music superstars come together to celebrate the holidays with an acoustic collaboration:The 12 Days of Christmas Tour. Multiple CCMA Award-winning artists George Canyon and Aaron Pritchett have teamed up to share  a night of stories, songs, and family-friendly comedy.

Other special holiday programming includes Sing Noël and Handel’s Messiah from the Choral Music programme; Christmas with Matt Andersen & Friends on December 19; and Fortunate Ones Christmas on December 22.

On January 18, Barenaked Ladies (BNL) co-founder and Canadian icon Steven Page brings an arsenal of songs from his 30-year catalogue for a special concert featuring the lush accompaniment of the P.E.I. Symphony Orchestra.

Boeing Boeing is a riotous farce about a successful architect named Bernard who is juggling three flight attendant fiancées – an American, an Italian and a German. A non-stop comedy and a romp of international proportions.

SEARCHING FOR ABEGWEIT: The Island Songs & Stories of Lennie Gallant returns to Harbourfront Theatre for 8 performances this summer 2019.

Hailed as a runaway theatrical hit with a solid track record of over 120 full house performances, SEARCHING FOR ABEGWEIT is a musical love letter to Prince Edward Island that stars the artist himself and presents his original folk, roots and rock music, alongside comedic stories, Island legends, and poignant tales in a multimedia format that utilizes film, and hundreds of paintings from well-known PEI visual artist and sibling, Karen Gallant. Sharing the stage with Gallant are nephews Jonathan Gallant on vocals and percussion and Jeremy Gallant on piano, along with fiddler Sean Kemp, and popular Acadian singer and multi-instrumentalist Patricia Richard.

SEARCHING FOR ABEGWEIT: The Island Songs & Stories of Lennie Gallant features original music from the span of Lennie Gallant’s extensive career, along with a number of new compositions written specifically for the show.

Gallant last performed his hit production at Harbourfront Theatre in the summer of 2017, before taking it on the road and touring it throughout the Maritime provinces in the fall 2017.

ABOUT LENNIE GALLANT:

Recognized by his peers as one of Canada’s best performing songwriters, Lennie Gallant has released twelve albums (10 in English and 2 in French) of original songs which have won him a host of awards and nominations from the JUNOs, Les Prix Eloizes, as well as 18 East Coast Music Awards, including 2017 ECMA Entertainer of the Year.

His double CD of the 22 songs from his multimedia hit production, Searching for Abegweit, won him an ECMA. He was named Canadian Folk Artist of The Year and his song “Peter’s Dream” was voted one of the Top Ten East Coast Songs of All time.

A recipient of the Order of Canada, Lennie is an international touring artist, who has performed all over the continent, in Europe, for the troops in Afghanistan, and at the Winter Olympics. One of his albums, When We Get There, even went up to the International Space Station with Canadian Astronaut Julie Payette (now the Governor General) for the crew to enjoy and orbited the planet 248 times.

Fresh on the heels of his 2017 ECMA wins, Gallant buried himself in the studio to record his new album Time Travel. The new songs have been garnering significant airplay and stellar reviews. The album was recently named one of the Top Ten Folk Albums of the Year (alongside albums by Richard Thompson, John Prine and Joan Baez) by a panel of Canadian music industry professionals. Lennie is nominated for two 2019 ECMA’s including entertainer of the year.

Lennie Gallant has been involved in numerous charity events, and he has received the PEI Red Cross Humanitarian of the Year Award for his work and support of many worthwhile causes.

The Fathers of Confederation Buildings Trust, known as Confederation Centre of the Arts (CCOA) is very pleased to announce the appointment of Angus Orford to its local board of directors.

“Angus brings a wealth of experience, a strong business background, and a passion in cultural heritage and the performing arts,” says Robert Sear, CCOA board chairman. “On behalf of Confederation Centre of the Arts, we are pleased to welcome Angus as we begin a new five-year strategic plan, aiming to connect with people across the nation and produce programming that explores Canada’s evolving identity.”

He is responsible for engineering, operations, and system planning for the utility, providing transmission and distribution service to approximately 80,000 customers. He previously worked with FortisOntario Inc., and several other positions within MECL.

“Growing up in Downtown Charlottetown, Confederation Centre was a focal point of the neighbourhood; the various expressions of art enriched my life from an early age and continue to do so for my children,” remarks Orford. “As Islanders, we are all fortunate to have access to this artistic hub and I am proud to be a part of its continued success.”

Orford’s education includes a Masters of Business Administration from Dalhousie University as well as both Bachelor of Science (UPEI) and a Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Technical University of Nova Scotia).

Orford’s philanthropic work includes past and current board work with Charlottetown Airport Authority; the UPEI School of Sustainable Design Engineering; the Charlottetown Downtown Residents Association; the Charlottetown Rotary Club; and previously with the College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts; the Provincial Easter Seals Campaign, and the Summerside Rotary Club.

The new board member joins fellow Executive members Robert Sear, chair; Alex MacBeath, vice-chair; Lori Pendleton, secretary-treasurer; Margo Thompson; and Kateri Coade. For a complete list of all board members, visit the Centre’s website.

Ross & Miller Mix It Up

DonBrookeLive-cropped

Don Ross is one of Canada’s most accomplished musicians. The first Canadian and the only two-time winner of the US National Fingerpick Guitar Championship, Don’s musical style borrows from blues, jazz, folk and classical music. He has toured regularly since 1989, across Canada, the US, Europe, Japan, Taiwan, China, Australia, Russia, and India. Don has played with symphony orchestras in Canada and Germany; composes for television, radio and film; and does production and recording engineering for a variety of other musicians. For this show at the Victoria Playhouse, Don teams up with Island-born singer-songwriter, Brooke Miller who got her start playing in the burgeoning Charlottetown indie music scene at the age of twelve and whose unique folk-rock sound has since been heard in venues across Canada, the US, Europe, and Japan.\

Ross and Miller are at the Victoria Playhouse on August 19.
