November 13, 2019 at 9:00am at The Guild

24d1ac28

This joint exhibition by Carina Phillips and Niki Heddle intends to bring awareness to respectable interactions with the environment, acknowledging its delicacy as well as its strength, and the beauty it has to offer. Both artists integrate whimsy and playfulness in their sculptural creations and installations to remind the viewer of the immense, innate connection we have with the natural world.

Tread Lightly has its official opening November 15, from 7pm-9pm.

Ryan Cook & Sunny Acres
featuring a Tribute to Buck Owens & the Bakersfield Sound

Ryan Cook & Sunny Acres are a five-piece eclectic Country/Western & Swing ensemble that blends jazz, hillbilly, & folk with home-brewed Canadian ballads. The band features Cook centre-stage on acoustic guitar in his familiar thumb-picking fashion along with Kye Ehresman (drums), Dave Campbell (pedal steel), Jill Chambers (upright bass) and Phil Sedore (lead guitar). Their 2019 concerts include songs from Cook’s award-winning albums, most recently Having A Great Time (2018 Music Nova Scotia Country Recording of the Year), plus a special medley to Buck Owens & The Bakersfield Sound that you will not want to miss!

Buck Owens created the “Bakersfield Sound”, a distinct flavour of country music that opposed the “Nashville sound” charting 21 #1 hits on Billboard charts between 1963-1988. In this show you’ll hear the familiar songs of Buck’s catalog like “A Tiger by the Tail”, “Waitin in your Welfare Line”, “Together Again”, and collaborations/cover songs Buck worked into his shows of artists like Simon & Garfunkel, Ringo Starr, The Band, and Dwight Yoakam.

In this original dance piece inspired by the classic tale of the star-crossed lovers,
Kimberley Cooper has created a new world for these themes of love and violence to
wrestle and play.
In this original dance piece inspired by the classic tale of the star-crossed lovers,

Adapted by Cory Bowles with original live music by Nick Fraser, this work breathes new life into one of Shakespeare’s best-known and loved works.

Says Kimberley Cooper, DJD artistic director, “It is still recognizable, but not in the traditional way. I find this story to be so seductive, and because it is so well-known, that gave us permission to dive into and invent different ideas.  My hope is that the audience will find delight in the twists and turns we took in the re-imagining of this passionate and tragic tale.”

ABOUT DJD

DJD is one of the only companies worldwide with jazz dance and music as its raison d’être. Performing both in its hometown of Calgary and on tour across Canada and beyond, DJD has produced more than 60 original works since its inception in 1984, many with live music. The company’s high-energy, unique style has caused people to describe their work as “music for the eyes.”

Please join us after the show in Studio 1 for an opportunity to hear and ask questions of DJD’s artistic director, Kimberly Cooper.
