Confederation Centre Updates 2020 Schedule

March 30 Update from Confederation Centre of the Arts

The 2020 Charlottetown Festival is now scheduled to begin first previews in late June

The Confederation Centre team is closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation each day. Following the advice of the Chief Public Health Officer, the Centre is encouraging everyone to stay safe and continue supporting one another through these unprecedented times.

CEO Steve Bellamy announced today that The Charlottetown Festival will run on a revised schedule, beginning in late June, pending further updates from the Chief Public Health Officer.

The Festival was originally to launch previews in early June for its flagship, Anne of Green Gables—The Musical™<https://confederationcentre.com/whats-on/anne-of-green-gables-the-musical/>. Due to the impact of COVID-19, all performances of Anne of Green Gables—The Musical™<https://confederationcentre.com/whats-on/anne-of-green-gables-the-musical/> from June 3-23 have been cancelled, with previews now beginning on June 27.

At this time, all other shows in The Charlottetown Festival will run as scheduled, opening in late June and early July and running until September 25 and 26. The revised schedule will depend on how the situation evolves over the coming weeks.

For those patrons whose performances have been cancelled, the Box Office will be in touch in the coming weeks to discuss options. The Centre team is dealing with a high volume of calls and greatly appreciates the support of patrons to date.

“We respect that there is still a high degree of uncertainty about what will be possible in the late summer and fall,” offers Bellamy. “We are adjusting our plans as the situation develops, and we will continue to do so in the weeks and months ahead. Whenever it becomes safe to gather again, we want to be ready for our patrons, members, and artists. We are looking forward to sharing the joy we all experience when we engage together as a community with the arts.”

Currently, all Centre programming has been cancelled or delayed until further notice. The Centre building itself remains closed to the public based on guidance from Public Health, however many staff are working from home and available via email and phone.
Bellamy continues, “Although current events have been cancelled, we are planning, at this point, for a late June start to The 2020 Charlottetown Festival–so long as it safe to do so.”

Please continue to visit the Centre website<https://confederationcentre.com/> and Centre social media for up-to-date information on the Centre’s response to this evolving situation.

Confederation Centre wishes to acknowledge the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Government of P.E.I., and the City of Charlottetown for their continued support.

Dedicated To You – East Coast Tour 2020

This spring, Jill Barber is dedicating a series of intimate shows to you. Built from your favourite songs and the stories behind them, the shows give you a chance to have Jill serenade your loved one live from the stage.

A Note from Jill:

“For me, there is no greater compliment than hearing that a song I wrote has become “our song” for another a couple. It means so much to me to know that a song of mine can instantly transport you back to another place, time, or person in your life.

This fall I will be heading out on tour to play a series of intimate shows inspired by the songs that resonate most with you. I want to hear from you personally: what songs speak to you and why? The shows will be built from your stories and memories.

Submit your stories and you could have your dedication played at the show in your town! To enter your submission:

  • Visit the jillbarber.com/dedicatedtoyou
  • Select the concert nearest you
  • Enter the song title, the person are dedicating the song to, and your story with that song.

We may not all be songwriters, but we all have a story, and for every great story there is a perfect soundtrack. I look forward to dedicating this tour to you!”

About Jill Barber:

Canada’s Sweetheart Jill Barber heads out on tour this spring with her ‘Dedicated To You’ tour, a special series of concerts composed of dedications from her fans to their loved ones. The three-time Juno Award nominated singer-songwriter will open the floor to requests and dedications of her most-loved songs through her website, where fans can share the stories and memories associated with her music.

Jill’s critically acclaimed repertoire spans a transformative spectrum from folk, to vocal jazz, to pop, and includes songs in both French and English. Following up her 2018 album Metaphora, which featured the #1 hit song ‘Girl’s Gotta Do,” her breakthrough jazz album Chances earned a Gold certification for 40,000 copies sold in Canada. Jill’s work has earned her awards, such as the Sirius XM Jazz Artist of the Year and the East Coast Music Award for Album of the Year, and scores of fans, including Blue Rodeo, Ron Sexsmith, and Kris Kristofferson, who called Jill “a real songwriter, and a damn good songwriter.”  Her evocative and timeless songs have been featured in film and TV, scoring shows such as Orange Is The New Black, The L Word, and Heartland, as well as powering a global advertising campaign for Chrysler with the track ‘Never Quit Loving You.’ An unforgettable, enchanting performer, Jill has headlined iconic venues such as Toronto’s Massey Hall and Roy Thompson Hall, Ottawa’s National Arts Centre, Vancouver’s Vogue Theatre and Toykyo’s Blue Note and Cotton Club. The ‘Dedicated To You’ tour will be an intimate and personal showcase of Jill’s most-loved music.

Two Tonics This Summer

Victoria Playhouse Announces 2020 Season

The Victoria Playhouse has announced its 39th season featuring two contemporary comedies and a change in format. The Victoria Playhouse Festival 2020 will be presented in the repertory   style, meaning the two plays will run on an alternating schedule all summer. Emily Smith, Executive Director of the Victoria Playhouse, commented on the change of scheduling from previous years. “Under this new format, Islanders will have more options to choose from each week and more time during our busy PEI summer to see everything they want to see at the Playhouse.”

Off the Grid by Fredericton playwright John Spurway and Popcorn Falls by James Hindman will play June 25 to September 6.  Off the Grid tells the story of Marty and Leonard who have agreed to spend a week in a secluded off-the-grid cabin while Marty writes an article on self-sufficient living. After meeting Lowell, their reclusive neighbor, Leonard begins to suspect he might be hiding something. But Lowell is not the only one keeping secrets! The Wellington Advertiser called the 2019 world premiere of Off the Grid a “compelling and heartfelt tale” and “laugh-out-loud funny”.  The Victoria Playhouse production will be the Maritime premiere of this new play.

Popcorn Falls features one small town, two medium-sized actors and twenty-one over-the-top characters. Down on its luck, Popcorn Falls has lost its namesake and could be turned into a sewage treatment plant by its bully neighbor. The residents’ last chance to save the town is a large grant that can only be used if they produce a play… in one week. Led by the Mayor and the local handyman, the enterprising townsfolk try to rise to the challenge. The New York Stage Review wrote that Popcorn Falls is “a perfect tonic to restore faith in humanity” and Broadway Radio said, “I haven’t heard laughter quite this hard in a long, long time!”.

In addition to Off the Grid and Popcorn Falls, the Playhouse will once again be presenting its popular Monday Night Concert Series featuring Canadian and international artists, as well as September programming. For more information, visit victoriaplayhouse.com.
