In this three-week course we will delve into writing for short form documentary—how does the short documentary differ from the feature length documentary? What do we mean by ‘writing’ for documentary and what place does it have in the creative process? Over the three weeks we
will cover these questions as well as all creative documents required by directors for applications and proposals.

This course is aimed to help writer/director’s hone their writing skills and prepare creative documents for submission to Film4Ward. The course is appropriate for both beginner documentary filmmakers, as well as experienced filmmakers looking to further develop their writing skills.

If you have an idea for a documentary but need that extra little push to get the idea off the ground or if you’ve been working on your idea for a while and need additional information to bring your writing elements together—this course is for you!

About Lorraine Price

At the age of seven, Lorraine announced she would be a storyteller when she grew up and she has never looked back. Born in Santa Monica, California, and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Lorraine now resides in Montreal, where she works as an award-winning writer and director.

Lorraine’s debut feature documentary LAST WOMAN STANDING premiered at the 2013 Hot Docs International Film Festival, where it was nominated for Best Canadian Documentary and finished in the Top Ten Audience Choice Awards. LAST WOMAN STANDING went on to win Best Direction at the 2014 Vancouver International Women in Film Festival.

Lorraine’s second film, INSIDE THESE WALLS, premiered on CBC Main Channel in October 2016. INSIDE THESE WALLS won Best Short Documentary at Crossroads Film Festival and was nominated for a coveted Golden Sheaf Award in the category of Best Social/Political Documentary.

In 2017, Lorraine was selected to attend a 10-day practical workshop in Cuba with Werner Herzog, where she wrote and directed a short docu/fiction hybrid, called MAGIA.

In 2019 Lorraine directed the final episode of TSN’s award-winning series ENGRAVED ON A NATION, titled ON THE LINE. ON THE LINE was nominated for four Canadian Screen Awards including, Best Series, Best Direction, Best Editing, and Best Sound. Lorraine went on to win Best Direction Documentary Series and Best Editing Documentary Series went to her editor, Pauline Decroix.

Lorraine has a passion for telling stories that embrace multiple perspectives and question singular truths.
