Jimmy Rankin Brings Cape Breton to PEI

Jimmy Rankin is one of Canada’s finest and most popular singer songwriters. Hailing from Mabou, Cape Breton, he rose to fame as a lead singer, guitarist and songwriting lynchpin for multi-platinum Canadian Celtic-pop heroes, The Rankin Family, who sold over 2 million records and earned five Junos including the coveted “Entertainer of the Year” award. In 1990, Jimmy embarked on a solo career, winning numerous awards and accolades over the course of six CD releases. Jimmy has built his reputation on the power and dynamism of his live shows which, while moving effortlessly between Roots, Country and Celtic stylings and drawing on an impressive catalogue of hits, appeal to fans of all ages.

After cutting his teeth on stages and dance halls in and around his Cape Breton Island home, Jimmy Rankin has established himself as one of the most entertaining and respected artists in the Canadian recording industry. Among others, Jimmy has toured and recorded with the likes of Keith Urban, John Prine, Alison Krauss and The Chieftains. Rankin’s authentic nature and enduring musical career have earned him the status of Canadian cultural icon and ambassador for Cape Breton’s Celtic music sound.

“Rankin isn’t resting on his reputation as Can-folk royalty. If anything, the man behind one of the many Rankin Family songs that defined the East Coast of Canada is working harder than ever.”
– Mike Devlin, The Times Colonist, Victoria, B.C.

“With oodles of raw vocal talent, great stage energy, and a knack for story telling, Jimmy Rankin puts on a stellar live show, not to be missed.”
– Countrified Canada

Jimmy Rankin appears at the Harbourfront Theatre on July 17th at 7:30 PM

The Ottawa musician has twelve albums to her credit and is the winner of multiple Canadian Folk Music Awards and a 2003 Juno Award for Roots and Traditional Solo Album of the Year.

Throughout a career that has seen her move from Ottawa to Los Angeles and back again, with stops in Nashville and Austin, and a healthy touring schedule that regularly takes her through the US, Europe, and across Canada, she has always created and performed music with unbridled feeling and vulnerability.

Dave Siglin, long-time director of the Ark, a nationally known acoustic music venue in Ann Arbor, Michigan wrote, “I presented literally thousands of performers, including many wonderful singer-songwriters whose music I now cherish. Of all of these, I find myself listening to the music of Lynn Miles more than that of any other performer who played the club.

“Her melodies are stunning and I think many of her lyrics are absolute poetry capable of standing alone. If you love good music and you’re never really listened to her, you owe it to yourself to do so soon”.

Lions and Bears and Foxes, Oh My!

Vancouver’s Lion Bear Fox will open the Victoria Playhouse Musical Mondays on July 4. Originally known for their respective solo careers, Christopher Arruda, Ryan McMahon and Cory Woodward joined forces as Lion Bear Fox in 2012 and were immediately selected as one of the top 20 unsigned bands British Columbia (Peak Performance Project).

The fall of 2013 saw the band release their self-produced breakthrough EP “We’d Be Good Men” and take Western Canada by storm, touring 15 times over the next two years including stops at Canadian Music Week (Toronto), Contact East (PEI), OSAC (Regina) Mission Folk Festival and The Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, BC. Terry David Mulligan with The Nanaimo Daily News called the group “a musical force of nature” and “emotional awakening”.

With the help of friend and producer Nygel Asselin (Half Moon Run), the trio spent ten days in the Vancouver Island wilderness crafting “the record of their lives” –  a collection of songs steeped in character and full of warmth.  One part folk, one part rock – a pinch of gospel and a dash of growl, the self-titled LP is a testament to the trio’s strength as songwriters.

“All three artists are known for the passion they bring to their performances and the honest songs they write,” writes the Ladysmith Chronicle, “and they have succeeded in creating gripping, dynamic songs while capturing a sincerity rarely heard this side of the 2000’s.

Straight From the Horse’s Mouth

I’ve been cheated by you since I don’t know when
So I made up my mind, it must come to an end

Look at me now, will I ever learn?
I don’t know how but I suddenly lose control
There’s a fire within my soul

20151228135939

Just one look and I can hear a bell ring
One more look and I forget everything, ohohoho

Mamma mia, here I go again
My, my, how can I resist you?
Mamma mia, does it show again?
My, my, just how much I’ve missed you

Yes, I’ve been broken-hearted
Blue since the day we parted
Why, why did I ever let you go?

Mamma mia, now I really know
My, my, I could never let you go

I’ve been angry and sad about the things that you do
I can’t count all the times that I’ve told you we’re through

And when you go, when you slam the door
I think you know that you won’t be away too long
You know that I’m not that strong

Just one look and I can hear a bell ring
One more look and I forget everything, ohohoho

Mamma mia, here I go again
My, my, how can I resist you?
Mamma mia, does it show again?
My, my, just how much I’ve missed you

Yes, I’ve been broken-hearted
Blue since the day we parted
Why, why did I ever let you go?

Mamma mia, even if I say
Bye, bye, leave me now or never
Mamma mia, it’s a game we play
Bye, bye doesn’t mean forever

Mamma mia, here I go again
My, my, how can I resist you?
Mamma mia, does it show again?
My, my, just how much I’ve missed you

Yes, I’ve been brokenhearted
Blue since the day we parted
Why, why did I ever let you go?

Mamma mia, now I really know
My, my, I could never let you go
