Falling Down Funny

On Friday, May 5th, I had the great pleasure of seeing the opening of ACT’s production of Noises Off by Michael Frayn, directed by Keir Malone. It was a hoot, to say the least. There are three acts in this production, with one longer intermission between Act I and II. The first act follows the dress rehearsal of a play within the play, a farce called Nothing On. The actors fumble through their piece – starting and stopping with interruptions from their very tired director (played by Richard Haines). Between acts, a speedy crew of stage-hands flip the set from front to back and then again from back to front. Watching this transformation was theatre magic, a real treat that kept me from making my usual mad dash to the washroom once the lights came up for intermission. The second act follows the actors as they perform their piece on a rather emotional day. Because their show is “in play” in front of “an audience,” we get to watch as their personal drama unfolds practically in silence backstage. Act II was hands-down my favourite part of the production – So much choreography, and slapstick humour. I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. After flipping the set back to its original position, the chaos intensifies in Act III as we see the actors performing their piece with all of their unsolved vendettas against each other. Some stand-out performances include Noah Nazim as the self-deprecating Frederick Fellowes, and Amy Sobol as the basket-case Assistant Stage Manager, Poppy. However, all of the performers in this piece have their moments of hilarity, and it was often difficult for me to choose who to watch and when. They had their work cut out for them with the fast pace nature of this show, and boy did they follow through!

For me, some of the best shows are the ones where there’s so much going on that it’s hard to catch everything, where my eyes are glued to the performers, where I’m laughing audibly without a hint of insecurity… Noises Off had all of this and more! Don’t sleep on this piece – playing this week from Wednesday (May 10th) – Saturday (May 13th) at The Florence Simmons Performance Hall in Charlottetown!

7th Story Window Ledge Story

March 8, 2019 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm at The Guild
Fast-paced and full of energy, this sophisticated satire takes place on the window ledge of a seven-storey apartment building where a man is contemplating suicide.

Unknown

Endlessly interrupted by a variety of quirky, self-absorbed tenants, he becomes drawn into the absurdity of their daily lives.

7 STORIES is a meta-theatrical gem of a black comedy, full of eccentric characters with a wistfully existential conclusion.

This is the Festival’s first full-length production, and first Canadian work. 2019 marks 30 years since the premiere of this Canadian classic by multi-award winning Canadian playwright Morris Panych.

LIGHTNov15
“Light is the thread we find woven through all the different celebrations of this season,” says Parent. The theme also ties into a holiday tradition in the Watermark’s community: North Rustico’s home lighting displays. “We can’t think of a better way for your family to cap off the evening than taking in the splendour of the lights.”
The two were last seen making Island audiences laugh and smile as L.M.’s quintessential kindred spirits in Anne & Gilbert. “The summer season was so easy-going, fun, and full of chemistry”, says Griffin. “It only seems natural for us to continue collaborating through the winter because, let’s face it… we’re hilarious together.” Joining them for LIGHT is fellow A&G cast-mate  and musical director, Aaron Crane.
Neither Griffin nor Parent is new to the Watermark Theatre. Parent was a company member for 6 seasons, while Griffin performed children’s theatre there over two summers with her company, Cat’s Pajamas Theatre Company.
Tickets are $20, all fees included, and sold at the door. There will be free cookies and cider, as well as a cash bar. Watermark Theatre is located at 57 Churchill Ave in North Rustico, PE.
Becca Griffin and Rebecca Parent are Island-based theatre arts professionals. In LIGHT, they combine their talents as well as their personal artistic intentions: bringing together families and involving communities through the performing arts.

‘Melville Boys’ Opens 35th Victoria Season

The Victoria Playhouse opens its thirty-fifth season on June 26 with Norm Foster’s classic Canadian comedy, The Melville Boys. The Victoria Playhouse has produced dozens of works by Canadian playwrights, both emerging and established, since its first season in 1982.

“Norm Foster is Canada’s most produced playwright,” says Pat Stunden Smith, Managing Director of the Victoria Playhouse. “He has a great instinct for dialogue and his scripts are at once funny and real.”

The Melville Boys features Jeremie Saunders and Becca Griffin, reprising the dynamic onstage rapport that made 2014’s Kiss the Moon, Kiss the Sun such an outstanding success. Newcomers to the Victoria Playhouse, Corey Turner and Helen Killorn, round out this vibrant cast.
