The Confederation Singers and the Confederation Centre Youth Chorus present a concert of choral music and readings in honour of Canada’s war veterans.

“In Remembrance offers an evening of thought-provoking poetry complemented by apt selections of choral music–one reflects and heightens the other,” says Don Fraser, director of choral music at Confederation Centre.

Musical selections include, ‘In Remembrance’ by  Eleanor Daley, ‘Call to Remembrance’ by  Richard Farrant and ‘Distant Land’ from John Rutter.

Sobeys LIVE @ the Centre Presents ‘In Remembrance’ at Historic Trinity United

Annual Remembrance Day concert will be performed by the Confederation Singers and Confederation Centre Youth Chorus

The Confederation Singers and the Confederation Centre Youth Chorus will present a recital of choral music and readings in honour of the nation’s war veterans. Also marking the 100th Anniversary of the end of the First World War. In Remembrance takes place Sunday, November 11, at 7:30 p.m. at Trinity United Church in Charlottetown.

“In Remembrance offers an evening of thought-provoking poetry complemented by appropriate selections of choral music; one reflects and heightens the other,” offers Don Fraser, director of choral music at Confederation Centre. “Much of the poetry is from the First World War, and included in the music is a Canadian choral setting of the famous In Flanders Fieldspoem.”

The concert will also feature the selection ‘I’m Dreaming of Home’, which members of the Youth Chorus performed at the dedication ceremony for the newly restored Canadian National Vimy Memorial in France on April 9, 2007, the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

Other featured music selections include: Eric Whitacre’s ‘Sleep’; ‘In Remembrance’ from Canadian composer Eleanor Daley; ‘The Road Not Taken’ by Randall Thompson; the beautiful ‘Pie Jesu’ by Fauré; and ‘Ubi Caritas’ by Ola Gjeilo.

Mark Holy Day with The Confederation Singers

 Confederation Centre’s adult choir, the Confederation Singers, present the annual Choral Music on a Holy Day on Good Friday, March 30 at 7:00 p.m. at Trinity United Church.

Under the direction of Donald Fraser, the Singers will perform a stirring selection of music of the greatest French composers. The headline work is Louis Vierne’s Solemn Mass, and complimenting this epic piece will be two movements from the Gabriel Fauré Requiem. Rounding out the evening will be the Fauré Cantique de Jean Racine, the Ave Verum of Camille Saint-Saens, and the beautiful Panis Angelicus of Québec City composer, Antoine Dessane. The organ accompanist is Frances McBurnie.

Rejoice in Choral Christmastime with Sing Noël

Beloved holiday tradition presented at Trinity United Church in Charlottetown

Come and be merry on December 17 when the Chorus takes to the stage at 3 p.m. to perform Sing Noël – an evening of classic Christmas carols performed in the beauty of Trinity United Church. The large youth choir will be joined by audience favourite Joey Kitson and guest host Valerie Moore.

Featured concert selections include both contemporary and classic Christmas carols, such as ‘Welcome Yule’, ‘In Bethlehem’, ‘Star Carol’, ‘O Come All Ye Faithful’, ‘Angel Tidings’, and ‘O Holy Night.’

Last Chance to Hear Youth Chorus

The Confederation Centre Youth Chorus will present its popular annual spring concert Voices of Spring this Sunday, April 9, at 3 p.m., at Trinity United Church in Charlottetown.

The concert will include classics by Bach, Handel, Palestrina, and Pergolesi as well as contemporary and traditional folksongs. Selections will be featured that the Chorus will be singing on their upcoming tour to Rome and Florence, Italy. Donald Fraser, Choral Music Director, will direct the 55-member Chorus, with accompaniment provided by Sara White.

The Chorus is scheduled to sing at St. Peter’s Basilica,The Vatican, on Sunday, April 23, at 10:30 a.m. This high-profile opportunity promises to be the highlight of the year for the Youth Chorous, and follows many months of preparation and fundraising.

The Confederation Centre Youth Chorus provides Island youth, ages 8 to 20 with a unique opportunity to develop their musical skills at home and abroad. The Chorus performs regularly at Confederation Centre, Trinity United, and other venues. Members have recorded two studio albums and have toured extensively, travelling to Italy, France, Belgium, Great Britain, Florida, Washington D.C., New York City, British Columbia, Quebec, Ontario, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

Mass for Peace: The Armed Man

The Choral Music Programme with Confederation Centre of the Arts presents Choral Music For A Holy Day, this year featuring the Karl Jenkins epic Mass for Peace : The Armed Man. The concert will be held at historic Trinity United Church, in Charlottetown on Good Friday, April 14, at 7 p.m. Maritime Electric Company is the generous sponsor for the Choral Music Programme.

The Confederation Singers under the direction of Donald Fraser will be joined by guest soloists Suzanne Campbell, Shannon Scales, Masoud Fahandezhsaadi; members of the Atlantic String Machine; a percussion ensemble lead by Dave Shephard; and Sarah Chace, flute, Laura MacLeod, trumpet, and Frances McBurnie, organ.

A Mass for Peace : The Armed Man was commissioned by the Royal Armouries to mark the transition from one millennium to another. It reflects on the passing of “the most war-torn and destructive century in human history” and looks forward in hope to a more peaceful future. The Armed Man is dedicated to the victims of the Kosovo conflict, whose tragedy was unfolding as the piece was being composed. It was first performed in 2000 by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the National Youth Choir of Great Britain, conducted by the composer himself.

The text incorporates words from various religious and historical sources, including the Islamic call to prayer, the Bible, and the Mahabharata. Writers whose words appear in the work include Rudyard Kipling, Alfred Lord Tennyson, and Sankichi Toge, who survived the Hiroshima bombing but died some years later of leukemia.

“I find the tradition of Sing Noël gets me in the Christmas spirit every year,” says Kitson, of Rawlins Cross. “It’s a break from the hustle and bustle; gathering with family and friends to enjoy the sounds of the season.”

The Youth Chorus is led by Donald Fraser, choral music director at Confederation Centre. “Young voices, great music, and Christmas — what could be better than that?” he offers. “The beauty and purity of these blended voices in three and four part harmonies cannot be equaled.”
