Fresh to the Table

Kings Playhouse, Young at Heart Theatre and Playwrights Atlantic Resource Centre are accepting play submissions for Fresh from the Island – a new works festival.

What We’re Looking For:

We are committed to presenting performances, offering educational opportunities, and championing connection through storytelling. We encourage submissions from equity deserving writers and creators, and commit to working collaboratively to provide work environments and partnerships that are safe, inclusive and fun throughout the process.

We employ a blind submission process to avoid unintentional bias on the part of our team of qualified readers.

A $20 submission fee supports the producing of the 2023 Fresh from the Island festival.

Fresh From The Island will present the three finalist PEI playwrights in live readings in a festival weekend October 19-22 2023. Each of the three selected scripts will be paired with local actors and professional dramaturgs for an intensive workshop culminating in live, concert-style readings that are open to the public.

**Unfinished scripts will be considered**

Applications open for play submissions until June 16, 2023. To submit: https://2053.na.ticketsearch.com/sales/salesproduct/15037

What is Young at Heart?

Young At Heart Musical Theatre For Seniors, Inc. is a not-for-profit, charitable organization, based in Prince Edward Island that provides professional and original musical theatre productions for senior citizens in long-term care and retirement facilities.

We are currently in our 10th year of operation and we are the only organization of its kind east of Ontario. We exist to enrich the lives of senior citizens who are generally isolated by giving them a vibrant and interactive experience that will brighten their spirits and potentially improve their health and well-being.

The Atlantic region’s aging population solidifies our mandate to continue to provide vibrant and original Canadian musicals to those with little chance of seeing a show outside of their retirement and long-term care facilities. We have touched the lives of thousands of senior citizens in more than 30 facilities in PEI with several original Canadian musical shows.

Senior citizens, as many studies have shown, benefit greatly from both music and theatre. Some noted improvements included increased awareness and concentration, enhanced awareness and social interaction, improved memory and recall, better mobility and coordination, diminished pain and tension, improved recovery times and relaxations, and of course a happier outlook on life. Older adults that are exposed to music and theatre have shown improvements in anxiety, depression and loneliness levels which are three key factors in maintaining proper mental and physical health.

Our company, whose primary focus is on performing for long term care residents, touches on every one of those benefits, lifting their spirits, hearts and minds, and enriching seniors’ lives.

PTN Promotes Island Theatre

A group of six Island professional theatre companies have come together to form the Professional Theatre Network of PEI in order to share resources, collaborate, and work with government, all with the purpose of furthering professional theatre on the Island. The six companies are The Charlottetown FestivalThe GuildHarbourfront TheatreVictoria PlayhouseWatermark Theatre, and Young at Heart.

These companies collectively hire approximately 500 full time, part time, and seasonal workers each year and they spend over $5.5 million annually, proving that professional theatre is a major employer and economic contributor to the Island. The group defines professional theatres as organizations that strive for artistic excellence and in which the artists are consistently paid for their work at a Canadian Actors’ Equity and Associated Designers of Canada standard or its equivalent.

The PTN are planning and have planned several new initiatives. First and foremost is the desire to rally government and corporate support for a large scale marketing initiative promoting Prince Edward Island as a theatre destination. Similar to previous campaigns featuring golf courses and local food, the PTN sees professional theatre as a way to draw more tourists to the Island.

This year, the PTN, along with governmental agencies, began a Mentorship Program in which 16 interns were trained this summer with theatres across the Island. This program will continue into 2017 and beyond.

The PTN is also looking at new ways to offer packaged ticket offers where audience members may buy a “Theatre Passport” to see productions at numerous theatres throughout the summer months. Other coordinated ticketing possibilities are also being explored.

Possible collaboration opportunities include joint Events (March 27th), joint marketing opportunities, additional training or development partnerships, and sharing resources whenever possible. A theatre blog has been launched at http://www.peitheatre.com as a way to promote all the theatres productions at one location.

In addition to their monthly meetings, representatives of the PTN have already, and will continue, to attend outside meetings and conferences voicing the concerns and wishes of the group, all in the hopes of furthering attendance to theatrical events and fueling the provincial economy.

For further information and/or to set up an interview with any of the member theatre companies please contact Catherine O’Brien at cathjobrien@gmail.com or 902-393-9419.

Always Young at Heart

Young At Heart Musical Theatre For Seniors is a non-profit, charitable organization that is dedicated to producing vibrant, professional and original theatre. Created to tour to seniors living in PEI and the Maritime provinces, we are the only professional company providing this type of theatre east of Ontario. In fact, Smile Theatre, based in Toronto, helped us get out start over ten years ago.

Wow! Time flies.
