Rags to Riches

Happy 90th birthday to the incomparable, one and only, Frankie Valli.

Join us this summer at the 2024 Charlottetown Festival for the award-winning “Jersey Boys: The story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons”. They were just four guys from New Jersey – until they sang their very first note. They had a sound nobody had ever heard, and people couldn’t get enough. But while their harmonies were perfect on stage, their lives off stage were a very different story.

Catch the rags-to-riches story of the 1960s rock and roll group Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, featuring hit songs like “Sherry”, “Walk Like A Man”, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”, “December, 1963 (Oh What A Night)”, and more!

Jersey Boys delighted audiences on Broadway and London’s West End, and has been honoured with four Tony Awards, including Best Musical; the Olivier Award for Best New Musical; and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album.

Singing Stories This Saturday

Join the Confederation Youth Chorus on Saturday, April 27 at 3:00pm at The Mack for their final concert of the season, “Singing Our Stories”.

There’s nothing like a good story. Everyone has their favourites, and everyone has their own unique story to share. When we sing our stories we give them even more power and depth, helping us to see our lives in new ways and connect to the lived experience of others.

Offering songs from a variety of styles and influences including art music, blues, folk, and musical theatre, and incorporating songs chosen by the singers themselves, in this program we share in the stories of others and celebrate our own as we create and witness them together.

Featured composer/arrangers John Rutter, Tim Minchin, Clifford Crawley, Nancy Telfer, Benj Pasek, and Justin Paul, and featuring songs from “Matilda” and “The Greatest Showman.”

Tickets are available now here: https://confederationcentre.com/…/confederation-youth…/

Note that individuals under 19 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to performances at The Mack.

Preserving Island Heritage

Confederation Centre Art Gallery was among Islanders who were recognized recently for preserving and promoting Prince Edward Island’s heritage.

PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation, along with Lieutenant Governor Antoinette Perry, presented the 2024 Heritage Awards to groups and individuals in several categories at Eptek Art & Culture Centre in Summerside.

“I want to congratulate all the recipients of this year’s Heritage Awards,” said Fisheries, Tourism, Sport and Culture Minister Cory Deagle. “These individuals and organizations have shown the importance of valuing and preserving our past so it can remain for many generations to come.”

The Gallery was presented with the Award of Honour for “dedication to local art history, scholarship, education, and the collection and conservation if Island artwork.”

Confederation Centre of the Arts congratulates fellow recipients of 2024 Heritage Awards. “The recipients of the Heritage Awards are remarkable again this year,” said Matthew McRae, executive director, PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation. “It is truly inspiring to witness Islanders’ ongoing dedication to preserving and celebrating our heritage.”

All Things Great and Small

“What is this? A Centre for ants? It’s got to be at least … three times bigger than this!” – Derek Zoolander, 2001.

Here, Adam Brazier, Artistic Director of Performing Arts, adjusts the theatre maquette – or model – for the upcoming production of Jersey Boys. Built by a designer, these models help directors, technical crew, designers, and cast visualize logistics, progressions, and movement.

Everyone at the Centre is excited to soon present The 2024 Charlottetown Festival. Which shows will you be attending?

Persia on PEI

Tonight only, make sure you experience an incredible, intimate and invirorating performance at The Mack by Debut Atlantic-presented Amir Amiri Ensemble. Tickets to this performance are only $20.

Cultural innovator and santur player Amir Amiri brings this ancient instrument into the musical conversations of our time, across borders and transcending genres. Dazzlingly virtuosic, Amir creates an enchanting and unique musical universe with every performance.

The santur is 92-stringed instrument most similar to a hammered dulcimer and ancient ancestor of harp, the yangqin, the harpsichord, the qanun, and the cimbalom.

The Amir Amiri Ensemble is an ensemble of virtuoso musicians from the Persian tradition: Amir Amiri (santur), Abdul-Wahab Kayyali (oud), Reza Abaee (ghaychak), Omar Abu Afech (Viola), and Hamin Honari (percussion).

Inspired by the diversity and fluidity of the many musical influences of Iran, the Amir Amiri Ensemble creates an engaging and distinctive sound, fusing the refinement of traditional and spiritual Persian music with folkloric and modern elements, creating a mystical conversation between these kindred-spirit musicians and the audience.

Keep Your Eyes Peeled

This summer, keep your eyes peeled for several Islanders starring in the legendary shows ANNE OF GREEN GABLES–THE MUSICAL™ and JERSEY BOYS at The 2024 Charlottetown Festival. Playing at Sobey Family Theatre, the Centre’s main stage, the productions are cross-cast – meaning most company members appear in both productions.

After performing the hit show THE SONGS OF JOHNNY & JUNE at The 2023 Charlottetown Festival, Islanders Jacob Hemphill and Melissa MacKenzie will return in main stage roles this summer. Hemphill is set to take on the part of Nick Massi in JERSEY BOYS, a member of the famed group The Four Seasons.

ANNE OF GREEN GABLES–THE MUSICAL™ will feature Island talent Marlene Handrahan playing Marilla Cuthbert, Catherine O’Brien as Rachel Lynde, and Shawna van Omme returning for her *fourteenth* Festival season.

Other Island-based company members include Sarah Bell, Jessica Burrett, and Kristen Pottle.

“We are proud to continually feature Island talent on our stages alongside artists from across the country,” says Adam Brazier, the Centre’s artistic director of performing arts. “There is a lot of excitement around the Festival lineup, and we are looking forward to another great summer in Charlottetown.”

A Good Man Gone

Confederation Centre of the Arts is mourning the passing of William (Bill) Ferguson, who passed away on February 10 at the age of 86. Bill was a long-time supporter of the Centre who served in various roles for 35 years, including time as a national board director and governor.

Bill first served as a national board director from 1987 – 2002, acting as chair of the audit committee for several of those years. From 2002 until his passing, he served as a board governor. Throughout his life, he remained engaged with Centre activities, and supported several donations from the Eric T. Webster Foundation, including a 2022 grant of $50,000, continuing that Foundation’s long tradition of supporting arts education at the Centre.

Our board and staff extend sympathies to Bill’s wife Mary Ann; their five children, Bill, Terence, Elizabeth, Robert, and Shannon; and the entire Ferguson family.
